I started down the path into architecture in the summer of 1987, when I got a job as a carpenter’s helper on a commercial renovation crew on the east side of Madison.
This was me in 1987.
By the early ‘90s my career as a musician was tragically cut short when I developed severe allergies to microwaved ramen noodles and freezing attic apartments.
I got a haircut (although not a very good one, to judge by the photo of me circa 1994) and entered into an apprenticeship with an architect in central Kentucky.
I passed the NCARB exam and became a registered architect in 1998. I worked in Kentucky until 2003, primarily designing civic and municipal buildings (schools, libraries, courthouses, detention facilities).
This is a photo of the Metcalfe County Courthouse in Edmonton Kentucky, which I designed in 2001.
In 2003 I moved to the Tampa Bay area and focused on architecture and planning for healthcare, manufacturing, science and technology clients.
During this time I got to work on some very interesting projects, including iconic beachfront houses, several hospitals, pharmaceutical research and development facilities and a nuclear power plant (unbuilt).
This is what I looked like in 2003, after I discovered hair gel.
I returned to Madison in 2017, where I live with my wife and son and no longer need to use product of any kind.
